Mail ballot rejections increased in Washington and Oregon after the United States Postal Service changed its postmarking rules.

The new rule led to additional ballots being discounted because of postmarks deemed late.

Lawmakers reported that, in several Washington counties, the number of rejected ballots more than doubled after the change.

The increase occurred because of the Postal Service's adjustment to the way it postmarks mail, with consequences for voters who sent ballots by the deadline.
