A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia interred in a coffin grown from mushrooms. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald reported the story on September 7.
The coffin is made from mycelium, the underlying network of fungi. It breaks down fast and puts nutrients back into the earth. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are today considering greener funeral options, outside of standard graves or cremation arrangements.
