On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people stormed the border. Spanish troops were deployed after local officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities stated that about 40,000 migrants came in on foot, roughly half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union declared Frontex would assist and urged Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces held the flow under control and labored to stop further deaths.
